Inspections FAQs

Inspections questions?  Contact Ian McCurdy, Chief Inspector

Do I need a MOB button at the helm?

  • Yes. See OSR 4.28.3, “Man Overboard Alarm: A yacht shall be equipped with an EPFS (e.g., GPS) capable of immediately recording a man overboard position from each helm station.” This requirement may be met by installing a MOB button at each steering station and connecting it to a remote, functioning GPS. Alternatively, a hand-held GPS with a MOB button may be mounted at each helm station and either hardwired to the boat’s main battery or powered by batteries that will be changed as required to maintain full-time functionality.

Are storm jibs required to have high-visibility colors? (OSR 4.26.2)

    • No.  Due to limited availability of materials, highly visible storm jibs are strongly recommended but they are not required. Every boat must carry a storm jib.

Are Crotch Straps required for PFDs?

    • No. Because of the limited availability in the U.S. and the fact that any modification to a PFD will void U.S.C.G Approval the BROC is supporting the U.S. Sailing Prescription allowing PFDs with or without crotch strap.

Is Dyneema rope a permitted material for use as lifelines?

    • Under the NOR Appendix A, Race Requirements, #2, "lifelines shall be made of single stainless steel wire and follow the minimum dimensions as per OSR 3.14.6; Table 8.  This modifies OSR 3.14.6 on the use of Dyneema rope as a lifeline material."  Thus, Dyneema rope is not allowed as lifelines.
