Bermuda Race Announces New Division Assignment Method |

The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee has introduced a performance screen(.xls) for the 2014 Newport Bermuda Race. The purpose is to identify modern lightweight, high-performance boats with large sail plans for assignment to the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division, and lower-performance boats for assignment to the St. David’s Lighthouse Division.

The 2012 Newport Bermuda Race has been awarded a Silver Certificate as a Clean Regatta by Sailors for the Sea, a non-profit organization founded and chaired by David Rockefeller Jr. that is dedicated to educating the boating community about protecting the oceans.

Following a week of celebrating a fast passage in the Newport Bermuda Race, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club hosted its Anniversary Regatta presented by the Butterfield Group Friday. ‘Christopher Dragon’, the J122 owned by Andrew Weiss from Mamaroneck NY, took the New York Yacht Club Trophy for first in the 31-boat fleet.

It may seem a little boring: one long, 635-mile port-tack reach in a 15-25 knot northeasterly, sailing mostly under jib and main. The fact is that the smaller boats had a lot more complicated challenge, and they’re the ones that did well on corrected time.

As of 1800 Sunday, six boats had finished the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race, each of them breaking an elapsed time course record. In addition, more has been learned about two boats that withdrew from the race.

When the 6-hour delay came off the Yellowbrick tracker on Saturday afternoon, it wasn't as though the doors to Sailing Reality were suddenly thrown open. There's been plenty of Reality to spare for the sailors over the last day and also for those of us who happen to be on shore this year, who have been in such conditions, and who can easily imagine the mixed pleasures and challenges and anxieties of sailing so close to the edge.

Sixteen hours into the 48th Newport Bermuda Race, the northeast wind that sent the fleet off at high speed under spinnakers on Friday has strengthened offshore and held up all night. Four boats have retired from the race due to damage, with no reported injuries.
