The day after the Newport Bermuda Race prizegiving in Bermuda, the Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC) learned that an error occurred in the ISAF classification submitted for Kit Will, a crewmember aboard Carina in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race. When Rives Potts, Captain of Carina, learned of the mistake, he immediately returned the Corinthian Trophy to the Bermuda Race Organizing Committee and apologized for the incorrect listing and the confusion about the trophy. The trophy is awarded for the best performance by an all-amateur crew in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division of the Newport Bermuda Race.
Dr. John Osmond, Chairman of the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race commented, "The 'All-Amateur' trophy was awarded to Carina on the basis of submitted crew information. Because there was an ISAF Category 3 professional sailor onboard, the boat was not eligible for that prize. Rives Potts returned Corinthian Trophy to Royal Bermuda Yacht Club immediately. The trophy will be presented to the proper boat in due course.”
