The most you hear from your alma mater is usually a phone call asking for a donation. For sailors, maybe you get to race in the alumni regatta. But for a lucky group of Yale University alums and undergraduates, an ocean race was the perfect way to make a stronger connection between students and alums.

There are some wonderful National Geographic images framed of Bermuda Race starts of the past in the Newport Room of the RBYC. This is our press office and not only is it inspiring to overlook the massive field of code flags fluttering in the warm breeze outside, there are illustrated histories of this race all over the walls to help us make some important connections.

Until sometime early Sunday morning, Blue Wheeler, a seventh grade earth science teacher, thought he knew a lot about the Gulf Stream and it’s meandering warm flows. After using up nearly 70 miles of race track aboard the Swan 53 Skye to find it and learning it wasn’t helping them, he realized he had a lot to learn.

After more than 50 combined Bermuda Races of experience, the crew aboard Kodiak were celebrating the end of a cracking run from Newport when they faced an unexpected challenge as they made their way to Hamilton on Sunday afternoon.
Dorade Log: Finished! Just after midnight

We finished last night as the breeze eased way off, crossing the finish line at about 1.5 knots of boat speed. Provisional results are already on the website. At this point, Dorade is listed as finishing fourth in our class—not as well as we’d hoped, but respectable for a 1929 design.

After the 48-foot McCurdy & Rhodes sloop Carina won her second St. David’s Lighthouse trophy in 2010 (the first was in 1970), owner Rives Potts sent her off on a racing circumnavigation of the globe. Her next "finish line" will be the start of the 2012 Bermuda Race.

Entries for the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race that starts in Newport RI on June 15th are running slightly ahead of 2010. To date 147 boats have entered the registration portal on the race website. Of these, 132 have submitted their Application for Entry (AFE) and 108 have been approved.
